Public facilities are often accessible to all citizens. This applies to buildings and public transport, but also to government websites, apps and all digital products for the (semi-)government.
Digital accessibility means designing websites, apps and digital documents in a way that makes them easy to understand and use for people with disabilities.
As of July 1, 2018, it’s already mandatory for (semi-)government organizations to develop websites and mobile apps according to the accessibility requirements established by the EU (WCAG 2.0 guidelines).
Some of these requirements consist of relatively simple things like subtitling videos, but also think about making sure there is enough contrast on your website or offering an read-aloud function. There is a whole list of standards to help you make your website or app accessible.
Governmental bodies should publish an accessibility statement for every website and app they develop and/or make available. This accessibility statement shows which requirements/guidelines the product meets.

The great thing about creating accessible websites, is that it ultimately provides a better experience for all your users. Because even for people without disabilities, it’s nice when a website is clear and works well. Research has also shown that websites that score well on accessibility reach a larger audience, rank higher in Google and are more user friendly than websites that score low on accessibility.
